Welcome To Springwood School

On behalf of the entire Springwood School family, we welcome you to our website! I’ve served as Headmaster here since 2012 and have seen firsthand the legacy Springwood carries in the Greater Chattahoochee Valley area and the significant role it has in this community.

Springwood provides a strong academic education, but beyond that we emphasize values that are so necessary for true success in today’s ever-changing world. One of these primary core values is the commitment Springwood makes to provide a college preparatory education in a Christian environment.

Having been in existence since 1970, Springwood benefits from decades of success, and we believe Springwood has a very bright future. We continue to see our current families and students that come from local and international locations embrace the culture and believe “greater things yet to come.” We desire to prepare the next generation of leaders so they are well-equipped for their life’s work. At Springwood, our students graduate with so much more than a diploma!

After exploring our website, we encourage you to visit our campus and see what Springwood has to offer. I would enjoy the opportunity to meet you. We Are…Springwood!

Rick Johnson

About Our Headmaster

Rick Johnson has served for over 30 years in independent education. Since arriving at Springwood the school has realized enrollment growth, earned the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) Blue Ribbon award each year, won academic and athletic state championships, multiple region titles. In July of 2015 Springwood received the prestigious AISA President’s Award.

Recently, he has led the resurgence of the Springwood Lady Wildcats to a prominent position in the AISA. Accomplishments since 2012 include back-to-back region championships, three Final Four appearances, a State Runner-up finish in 2015 and, most recently, the 2016 AISA 2A State Championship with Springwood’s first-ever undefeated basketball team (30-0).

Mr. Johnson arrived at Springwood following ten years as Headmaster at Trinity Christian School in Dublin, Georgia. Under his leadership the school experienced unprecedented enrollment growth and facility expansion. From 2002 to 2009, Trinity’s enrollment grew from 300 students to consecutive years of over 500 students, including an all-time high of 511 students in 2008-09. Mr. Johnson initiated several programs that enabled the school to build new facilities valued at over $6 million. He also led the school in the initial pursuit of dual accreditation with the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Academic, athletic, and fine arts programs all experienced great success as the school won 23 state championships in 10 different sports and garnered the Top School award for athletic and fine arts accomplishments eight of the ten years he was there.

Prior to the decade at Trinity Christian, Mr. Johnson had over 20 years of athletic administration and coaching success with four private educational institutions (three colleges and one high school) in the states of Minnesota, Tennessee, and North Carolina. During that time, he also served as the District Chair for the National Christian College Athletic Association and later was selected by his peers to serve as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of this organization comprised of over 100 colleges in the United States and Canada.

Mr. Johnson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, Wisconsin, and a Master’s degree in management from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama. He has studied further in the Educational Leadership program at Georgia Southern University.

Rick has been married for 32 years to his wife Lynda, an accomplished soloist and musician who currently serves in the worship ministry and as the office manager at Spring Road Christian Church in Lanett. The couple has three adult children.

Johnson’s coaching experience includes football, basketball, and baseball. His basketball coaching career of over 30 years has allowed him to be a guest clinician at camps and clinics in multiple states as well as on mission trips to Mexico and the Dominican Republic. His high school teams have won eight different state titles and he’s been honored as Coach of the Year at the National (1), State (2) and Region level multiple times. His teams have recorded over 575 wins.
